Wasserman Schultz blasts ‘treasonous’ Trump

July 28, 2016

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was forced to step down this week as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee following a saga surrounding leaked emails, on Thursday accused Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump of treason, JTA reports.

Referring to Trump’s call for Russia to uncover emails deleted by Hillary Clinton, Wasserman Schultz said the statement was “treasonous, it’s seditious, it’s unacceptable.”

Trump, apparently looking to reignite the long-running email scandal which dogged Clinton throughout the primary season, had called for Russia to retrieve thousands of lost Clinton emails which were deleted prior to the handover of her private email server to the FBI, and said hackers revealing the missing Clinton emails would be “rewarded mightily”.

“It would be interesting to see, I will tell you this, Russia, if you’re listening I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Trump said. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

FBI chief James Comey has called the Clinton private email saga “extremely careless”, but has also recommended that she not be indicted, a recommendation which has been accepted by Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Wasserman Schultz was unimpressed, however, by Trump’s comments as she spoke Thursday at an event at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia hosted by the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), where she was presented with an award.
