Two dead in shooting outside Michigan court

Two court bailiffs were killed on Monday afternoon in a shooting attack at in St. Joseph in southwestern Michigan courthouse, NBC News reports.

The gunman was later killed as well, authorities said.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said the confrontation took place about 2:25 p.m. ET at at the county courthouse in St. Joseph. A deputy sheriff was also shot and was stable at a hospital, he said.

Bailey added in a news conference that those injured were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph for treatment.

“Brave officers” took down the shooter, he said, quoted by the Detroit Free Press, adding the suspect was an in-custody inmate, thus suggesting the incident was a terrorist attack.

A Berrien County Commissioner told local station WBND that a man who was on his way to jail took a gun off a deputy and started opening fire.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said on Twitter that the shooting is under investigation.
