‘There are some people who want us to be victims’
May 4, 2016Jewish Home chairman and Education Minister Naftali Bennett spoke at the official Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony Wednesday night, reflecting on the similarities between the thirties and now vis-a-vis anti-Semitism.
“Especially now, against the background of evil spirits sweeping away some European countries, we must admit that there are those who want us to be victims – poor and weak,” Bennett said.
“We cannot educate the world not to be anti-Semitic,” he continued. “We cannot force the world to love us. But – and this is a big but – this time, we will stay alive.”
“Because, this time, anti-Semitism will encounter the iron wall of the State of Israel, in which the Jews are strong in spirit, self-confident, and immensely powerful.”
The resurgence of anti-Semitism worldwide remained a common theme throughout Wednesday night’s speeches, with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressing UNESCO’s divorcement of the Temple Mount from the Jewish people, and President Reuven Rivlin calling it a “chronic disease.”
