‘The driver took out a grenade
July 18, 2016Ofek Shaharabani, an IDF soldier who suffered moderate to serious wounds yesterday after a grenade exploded during a patrol in the Golan Heights, killing two of his comrades, was able to communicate with his parents today while still on a respirator – through writing.
According to Yediot Achronot, Shaharabani, now in the intensive care unit of Rambam Hospital in Haifa, communicated with his parents through writing, even though he could not see what he was doing, since his eyes are also bandaged from the grenade blast.
“We’re talking to him and he knows that we’re here,” said Shaharabani’s father. “He can’t speak because of the respirator. My wife asks him questions, and he writes back in shorthand, despite the fact that he can’t see what he’s writing.”
Ofek’s mother, Ilanit, said that when she asked him what had happened during the incident, Ofek was able to scribble out certain references: “The driver took out the grenade,” “Stop,” “I warned him,” and “I survived through a miracle.”
When Ofek asked about his friend Shlomo Rindenow, who was killed in the blast, Ilanit didn’t have the heart to tell him the whole story. “I told him that Shlomo was badly injured. We don’t want to tell him at this point about those that were killed.”
Reports from the army indicated that the grenade went off after a driver from another group of soldiers activated the grenade and threw it at the patrol that included Ofek.
Shlomo Rindenow, a lone soldier from the US, was killed in the blast along with Hussam Tapesh, from the village of Beit Jan in northern Israel.
Both soldiers were buried Monday – Tapesh in his hometown and Rindenow in the village of Netzer Hazani.
