‘Thank God I’m alive’
June 27, 2016A Singapore Airlines plane made an emergency landing at Changi Airport following a warning that oil was leaking in the engine. On the tarmac, the right wing became an inferno.
“I just escaped death!” Facebook user Lee Bee Yee said in a post. “After reaching Changi Airport, as the plane was landing, the engine burst into flames! Huge fire was burning!” Lee wrote.
“I thank God I am alive! I going home to hug my kids.”
No one was injured aboard the Boeing 777-300ER, but one passenger described those moments as a “so-close to death” experience.
One passenger caught footage of the conflagration from her window-seat before they were evacuated. The firefighters quickly put out the flames using foam.
Singapore Airlines said in a statement that Flight SQ368 was en route from Singapore to Milan when an engine oil warning message forced it to make an emergency landing nearly two hours into the flight.
“The aircraft’s right engine caught fire after the aircraft touched down at Changi Airport at around 6:50am,” it said.
“Passengers disembarked through stairs and were transported to the terminal building by bus.”
The airline said it would “be cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations”.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked Changi Airport and SIA for their quick response on Facebook.
“Relieved that all onboard were safely disembarked… SQ and CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore) are investigating the cause, and will get to the bottom of the matter,” he added.
