Tel Aviv One of World’s Three Most Innovative Cities

October 22, 2012

Tel Aviv has been chosen as one of three finalists to compete for the title of being the “Most Innovative City” in the world.

The competition is being run by The Wall Street Journal, in conjunction with Citibank. The other two finalists selected via an online vote were New York City and Medellin, Colombia. The winner of the final vote will be determined on Dec. 31.

The three finalists beat out a diverse group of other candidate cities, including London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Chicago, Singapore, Hong Kong, São Paulo, Toronto and Vienna, among others.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon used their social networking platforms to encourage voting for Tel Aviv.

“We are investing great efforts in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation,” Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said.

Tel Aviv has won numerous international awards. In 2011, it was voted winner of the GayCities competition, beating New York City, Madrid, Toronto and London among others for the title of the world’s most tolerant and proud city. In 2004, Tel Aviv was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a title that only 56 other cities in the world have been awarded.
