RNC crowd calls for Hillary Clinton to be ‘locked up’
July 21, 2016“Lock her up! Lock her up! Lock her up!” chanted the crowd on the second day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
They were referring to presumptive Democratic Party Nominee Hillary Clinton of course, as the US Presidential election kicks into high gear after Donald Trump was officially nominated as the Republican candidate on Tuesday.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was speaking at the convention, taking the opportunity to draw on his experience as a former federal prosecutor to conduct a court-style cross-examination of Clinton’s record, to the crowd’s roaring approval.
Christie – who was recently snubbed by Trump for VP candidate – went through accusations against former First Lady and Secretary of State Clinton one by one, pausing to ask the crowd “Guilty or not guilty?”, to which they invariably replied “Guilty!”
When the Governor began recounting the recent Email scandal, in which the Justice Department – by the FBI’s recommendation – decided not to prosecute Clinton for storing Emails containing classified information on a private server, the crowd starting chanting that she should be locked up.
The chant was widely denounced in the media as yet another example of the inflammatory rhetoric that seems to often surround the Trump campaign, though not officially condoned by Trump or his campaign officials.
A far more extreme example is the comment made by Al Baldasaro, who is loosely affiliated with the Trump campaign, to the effect that Hillary Clinton should be executed for treason.
Speaking Tuesday on the Kuhner Report, a conservative radio show in Boston, Baldasaro said that “Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason.”
Baldasaro has appeared with Trump at a press conference, and has called himself an adviser to Trump on military veterans’ issues, according to Washington Post reports, but has no official position within the campaign.
He even doubled down on the comments a day later in an interview with New Hampshire radio station WMUR: “As far as I’m concerned, it is treason and the penalty for treason is the firing squad – or maybe it’s the electric chair now.”
The Trump campaign has officially distanced itself from the comments, that have even prompted a secret service investigation.
