Report: Senior officers to testify in defense of Azariya

July 23, 2016

The defense will begin to lay out its case in the Elor Azariya trial tomorrow (Sunday) morning. Azariya shot a wounded terrorist after the latter had committed a stabbing attack in Hevron.

Azariya himself will take the stand tomorrow for the first time in the trial, in order to lay out his version of the events following the stabbing attack.

He is expected to testify that he shot the terrorist because he anticipated real danger for himself and his fellow soldiers. He’s expected to claim that he’d heard that the terrorist might be strapped with explosives, that he saw the him moving his hands and legs, and that he saw a knife in close proximity to where the terrorist was lying on the ground.

Sources close to Azariya told Channel 2 News that senior reserve officers will testify in defense of Azariya, among them reserve Generals. According to the sources, these senior officers decided to testify after following the trial and coming to the conclusion that Azariya is not getting a fair trial, and that the outcome was decided before the trial started.

Azariya’s attorneys have said that the prosecution had 77 witnesses lined up, but decided to only summon 22 of them to court. The defense now intends to call to the stand a sizable portion of the witnesses that the prosecution decided to leave out, believing that their testimony will actually supports Azariya’s version of events.
