Public urged to attend funeral of lone soldier killed by grenade
July 18, 2016The family of a lone soldier from New Jersey who was killed in northern Israel Sunday has called on members of the public to join his funeral later today (Monday).
Sergeant Shlomo Rindenow, 20, was killed together with his comrade First Sergeant Hussam Tapesh, 24, when a hand grenade detonated during a patrol along the Syrian border for reasons which at this point remain unclear.
His funeral is set for 3 p.m. Monday, and will set out from the synagogue in Netzer Hazani, just south of Rehovot. He will be laid to rest at the nearby Netzer Hazani-Yesodot cemetery. The funeral will be broadcast live on Arutz Sheva.
Tapesh, an army reservist from the Druze village of Beit Jan who was driving the patrol jeep, was buried this morning in his hometown.
In an interview with Arutz Sheva Sunday, Shlomo’s brother Jeff described him as a uniquely dedicated and motivated soldier.
Speaking Monday to Israel’s Channel Two, Jeff called on the Israeli public to grant him the burial he deserved.
“For most of the course of his (army) service my brother was alone,” he said. “He volunteered to the army because he wanted to be a warrior. We are requesting that at least for his final departure he won’t be alone.”
