Police to tighten security at Republican National Convention
July 8, 2016Cleveland police officials have tightened their security plan for the July 18-21 Republican National Convention following the deadly shootings of police officers in Dallas, Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba told Reuters on Friday.
Tomba, who is Cleveland’s chief of convention security, also said he had written to out-of-town police departments that will be loaning officers to the city during the convention to assure them that their officers would be safe.
Investigators have identified the dead suspect in the shooting as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas, CNN reported on Friday.
Police are still trying to answer key questions, chief among them: Was anyone else involved in the shootings, which began Thursday night during a protest against police violence and left parts of downtown Dallas under siege for hours? And are other suspects on the loose?
According to CNN, the suspect who was killed after a lengthy standoff with police told negotiators that he was upset about recent police shootings, that he wanted to kill white people — especially white officers — and that he acted alone.
Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told the network that Johnson was the dead gunman. He had no criminal record or known terror ties, a law enforcement official said.
