Peres: Signing Pardons Does Not Mean I Forgive
October 15, 2011Attorney Ami Palmor, Head of Pardons Department in the Justice Ministry, arrived at the President’s Residence Saturday evening and delivered the files concerning the terrorists that are to be pardoned in the first part of the Shalit deal.
Peres will attach a letter to the pardons, as he did when he pardoned child-murderer Samir Kuntar in the Regev-Goldwasser deal in 2008.
At the time, Peres wrote: “I used the authority to grant pardons for the release of abducted prisoners Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. My decision does not denote any forgiveness for the murderers for their heinous acts. I do not forget and I do not forgive.”
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will meet Peres before the exchange is carried out. He will inform Peres of the final details of the deal after they are agreed upon in the meetings that representative David Meidan is holding in Egypt.
Nationalists protested Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. outside the President’s Residence and demanded that Jewish prisoners also be freed. “Of course we oppose vehemently the release of Arab terrorists, but since the government has already approved the deal, discrimination should at least be avoided, and the Jewish prisoners who have been serving for many years under harsh conditions should also be freed,” said an organizer.
