‘One of you will be the first female IDF Chief of Staff’

July 12, 2016

Prime Minister Netanyahu participated today in an event honoring female members of the IDF and security forces that took place at the Knesset on the initiative of MK Anat Barko.

Also in attendance were Chairman of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein, President of the Supreme Court Miriam Na’or, members of the Knesset, as well as female IDF soldiers and border police.

“We salute you,” Netanyahu said to the female members of the security forces, who he said were making a “huge contribution to the security of Israel.”

Netanyahu noted that when he was a soldier in training in the IDF in 1967, the only woman he saw in the army was the clerk on the base. “The only female was the clerk of the base; her name was Dalia Rabin [the wife of former Prime Minister Yitschak Rabin].”

“We’re in a period of great technological advancement, which contributes to ability and readiness. In my opinion you always had the ability, and if there ever indeed was a gap [in ability between the sexes], it’s quickly disappearing[…] we’re not about to waste half our human capital […] therefore we want you in all the branches of the security forces.”

“You’re already succeeding in business, politics, academia, medicine, engineering, culture and art- the time has come that you should be complete equals in the field of security. Therefore I salute you, the next female IDF Chief of Staff.”
