Olympic ban on Russian athletes upheld

With two separate International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) investigations into accusations of doping by Russian athletes, the former superpower may find itself banned from participating in the 31st Olympiad.
On Thursday the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld an IAAF-issued partial ban against the Russian Olympic Committee, barring Russian track and field athletes from participating in this year’s summer Olympics, which are set to begin in August.
The court’s decision confirms accusations of doping by Russian athletes, rendering the team unfit to take part in the summer games.
“The CAS panel confirmed,” a spokesperson said Thursday, “that the ROC is not entitled to nominate Russian track and field athletes to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games considering that they are not eligible to participate under the IAAF competition rules”.
But the IAAF has also been called to issue a full ban on the Russian Olympic Committee, barring all of its athletes.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reported that Russian sports agencies demonstrated a pattern of promoting the use of prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.
A second report by WADA published this week led to calls for a comprehensive ban on Russian participation in this year’s Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday it would not rule on the matter before Thursday’s decision by the CAS.
