Obama Hosts Annual Hanukkah Party

December 9, 2011

The holiday of Hanukkah is still about two weeks away, but President Barack Obama hosted the White House’s annual Hanukkah party on Thursday.

The celebration was attended by Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren and the White House’s new director of Jewish outreach, Jarrod Bernstein. Also present were Obama’s wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden.

Referring to the Hanukkah story, Obama told attendees that it is a story of “right over might, of faith over doubt” which “for 2,000 years has given hope to Jews everywhere who are struggling.”

Echoing comments he made last week to Jewish supporters, Obama also stressed the United States’ “unshakable support and commitment to the security of the nation of Israel.”

Earlier this week, the United States issued a special Hanukkah stamp which shows eight shapes behind the letters of “Hanukkah”, symbolizing the eight days and nights of the celebration of the holiday.

Each letter in the design is tilted to imitate the spinning of the traditional dreidel.
