Netanyahu: We stand alongside Germany

July 23, 2016

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Saturday night offered his condolences to Germany following the lethal shooting attack at a shopping center in Munich on Friday, in which nine people were murdered.

“Israel sends condolences to Germany over the murder of innocent citizens in the tragic shooting attack that occurred in Munich on Friday and wishes the wounded a quick recovery. Israel stands alongside Germany on this sad day,” Netanyahu said.

Friday’s shooting was carried out by 18-year-old Ali Sonboly, who went on a shooting rampage before committing suicide approximately a Kilometer away from the scene of the shooting.

Sonboly was of Iranian origin, though born and raised in Germany, and had dual citizenship.

He started the shooting spree at a McDonalds at around 5:50 p.m., and then moved across the street to the Olympia shopping center, where most of the victims were found.

German authorities said Saturday that a search of Sonboly’s house and computer turned up no ties to jihadist or terrorist groups, and no evidence of Jihadist motives.

The investigation is ongoing, but detectives did find evidence of “preoccupation with violence” and mass shootings.

Iran on Saturday strongly condemned the shooting spree, urging international consensus towards fighting terrorism.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi voiced Tehran’s sympathy with the German government and people.

“Today, fighting terrorism in whatever form and place should be considered as a serious and immediate demand of the international community and human conscience and the top priority by all countries in an international consensus,” he said.
