Netanyahu to Abbas: Let’s Talk in New York
September 19, 2011Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Monday to meet with him while the two are in New York.
“I call on the chairman of the PA to begin direct negotiations in New York that will continue in Jerusalem and Ramallah,” Netanyahu said.
“I suggest that Abbas start negotiations for peace instead of wasting time on useless unilateral steps,” added the Prime Minister.
He said that the PA’s unilateral move for statehood is not the way to advance peace, stressing the only way to achieve peace is through direct negotiations.
Abbas is in New York, where he is planning to present his unilateral statehood bid on Friday. He chose a terrorist’s mother to represent the effort. Netanyahu is scheduled to arrive in New York on Wednesday where he plans to present Israel’s truth to the UN.
Abbas has been pressured by the Quartet to drop his unilateral move and resume negotiations with Israel. He admitted earlier on Monday that he has been facing “huge pressure from the West”, but told reporters that while Ramallah had “seriously discussed all proposals” put forward by the Quartet, those proposals did not support the goal of “a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
The unilateral statehood bid is not supported by either Hamas or by the Islamic Jihad terror groups.
Hamas’ Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said on Sunday his group would not back a United Nations membership bid and warned that no Palestinian Authority leader had a mandate to sacrifice “fundamental Palestinian rights.”
Speaking in Gaza, Haniyeh said the terror group continued to support the establishment of a Palestinian state on any part of “historical Palestine” but would not seek to disrupt the UN bid.
The Islamic Jihad terror group has also said it does not back the statehood bid at the UN. Islamic Jihad Spokesperson Daoud Shihab said that Abbas should spend his efforts on achieving unity with Hamas, which controls Gaza and leaves the Palestinian Authority a split entity.
