Ministers demand government recognize Amona

July 6, 2016

The residents of Amona set up a protest tent in front of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem office on Wednesday. They are demanding that the government cancel the evacuation of the community, which is scheduled for December.

A number of ministers and Knesset members have joined the demonstrators, including Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home), Welfare Minister Haim Katz (Likud), Jerusalem Minister Ze’ev Elkin (Likud), and MKs Yehuda Glick and Miki Zohar (both Likud). All shared the call “Amona won’t fall again.”

Elkin told the attendees that “the nationalist government cannot allow an entire community in the Land of Israel to be evacuated under its tenure.”

“In the past, back during the days of the struggle for Givat Ulpana and Magron, I fought for a legal solution to regulate the homes, but sadly I was unsuccessful. It’s time to use all the means at our disposal and implement the existing legal solutions. As a government minister and a member of the Cabinet, I will continue defending Amona in particular and the all the communities in the Land of Israel as much as I can.”

Glick added: “The evacuation of a 20-year-old community in which 40 families live in inconceivable. We must leave no stone unturned in order to find a solution and to legitimize the community. Precisely now it’s important to continue strengthening the communities in Judea and Samaria.”

Zohar then took his turn. “The State of Israel must do all it can to prevent the disgrace of removing Jews from their homes,” he said. “Several days ago I submitted a bill that would delay the evacuation of Amona. Evicting Jews from their homes with their children and belongings is not a trivial issue and the state must allow the necessary time in order to evaluate the situation.”

The Amona central office has released a statement reading: “The tent will remind all who pass through the area, particularly those in the building across from it, that Amona will not fall. The time has come to hear from the Prime Minister and his advisers that Amona won’t fall again.

“It is time to stop surrendering to pressures from radical leftist organizations and to strengthen the pioneering residents and communities in Judea and Samaria, not to hurt them. It is time to change the conversation. The People of Israel demand it from their elected officials, so we will not abandon the tent until our homes in Amona are recognized. We will remain here until there is a settlement.”

The statement concluded by promising that “We will keep stepping up our efforts and we will do everything we can so that our homes in the community of Amona will not fall to the radical leftists who see this community as the first step on their way to dismantling dozens of other communities and evacuating thousands of homes. We call on the Jewish People to come and support us, to stand by our side in our just struggle.”
