Libya: Qaddafi Son Saif al-Islam Captured

November 19, 2011

The son of former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, Saif al-Islam Qaddafi, has been captured in the country’s southern desert, according to Libyan officials.

The British-educated 39-year-old seemed set to follow his father as Libya’s leader just one year ago. A screenshot allegedly showing him with bandaged fingers is circulating on the Internet.

Reuters said that a man who appeared to be Saif al-Islam Qaddafi, but whose identity was unconfirmed, was flown by Libyan militiamen to the town of Zintan on Saturday. A correspondent for Reuters who was on the plane reported that the man wore traditional robes with a scarf pulled over his face. His thumb, index finger and another finger were heavily bandaged.

According to the report, the correspondent asked Saif al-Islam Qaddafi if he felt alright and replied “Yes.”

“We have arrested Saif al-Islam Qaddafi in [the] Ubari area,” Mohammed al-Alagy, Libya’s acting justice minister, said Saturday. Saif Al-Islam and three armed companions were taken without a fight during the night, according to officials.

Saif Al-Islam is wanted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague.
