Liberman, Steinitz: PA Move Will Only Bring War
December 18, 2014Foreign Minister Avigdor Libeman condemned the Palestinian Authority Thursday for submitting a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to force Israel to withdraw from all of Judea and Samaria, and most of Jerusalem.
PA President Mahmoud Abbas, said Liberman, “is interested only in attacking Israel. The Palestinians have no other purpose. They will just worsen the dispute and make the situation in Judea and Samaria worse. This move will certainly not advance the peace process.”
The PA late Wednesday officially submitted the long-threatened resolution, which calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal from all lands liberated by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Jerusalem itself would be the capital of Israel and the Palestinian state, and the draft demands an immediate cessation “to all crimes that would impede a settlement of the conflict.”
The draft also calls for a continuation of talks between Israel and the PA.
In a meeting with PA negotiator Saeb Erekat Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the US would veto the resolution.
Erekat responded by telling Kerry if the US vetoes, the PA would apply to join all international organizations and conventions, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), in a further breach of the 1993 Oslo Accords, beyond the conventions it joined earlier in the year, effectively torpedoing peace talks with Israel.
Liberman joined other Israeli officials in condemning the Palestinian Authority. Intelligence Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz called the PA move a “declaration of war.”
Speaking to Israel Radio, Steinitz said that Israel needed to stop transferring funds to the Authority, and to consider a breakup of the PA if it continues on its current path. Steinitz added that the establishment of a Palestinian state under current conditions was a guarantee of war.
