Lapid: New IDF Chief Rabbi must state support for drafting women

July 12, 2016

Yesh Atid head Yair Lapid has demanded that IDF Chief Rabbi Eyal Karim publicly declare his support for drafting women into the army.

“The new Chief Rabbi, Colonel Eyal Karim, must say loudly and clearly: I support drafting women into the IDF,” Lapid wrote on his Facebook page. The issue arose after reports came out that Rabbi Karim previously opposing drafting women.

According to Lapid, “Otherwise he cannot be the Chief Rabbi of Karakal fighters, of the lookouts who sit across from Hezbollah, of the Air Force pilots, of naval ship captains, of every one of the thousands of female soldiers in the IDF.

“If he does not say it out loud, he cannot be the chief military rabbi.”

Lapid added in parentheses: “As for reports that he also said it’s permitted to rape attractive non-Jewish women during war, I refuse to believe that this is his opinion. If he think so, it’s not that he can’t be the chief military rabbi, he cannot be a rabbi at all.”

An IDF spokesperson has responded to comments on Rabbi Karim’s latter remark, saying: “Colonel Karim wishes to clarify that his comments were solely made in answer to a question on interpretation, and in no manner were they meant to be put into effect. Rabbi Karim never wrote, said or even thought that IDF soldiers are permitted to sexually harm a woman during war. Misinterpreting his remarks is wrong and misleading.”
