Labour reinstates MP who made anti-Semitic comments
July 5, 2016British Lawmaker Naz Shah, who was suspended by the Labour party over online posts about Israel, has been reinstated, a local party spokesman said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Shah, 42, was suspended in April after sharing a post on social media which supported the relocation of Israel to the United States.
In addition, she also called for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel and compared the State of Israel to Nazi Germany. The comments were posted online prior to her election as MP.
In January 2016, Shah sparked controversy when she insisted that Arab stone-throwing was not to blame for the death of Israeli children, including Adelle Biton, who died in 2015 after suffering serious injuries in a stone-throwing attack two years earlier.
The Labour party spokesman gave no reasons for Shah’s reinstatement.
“We’re simply confirming she has been reinstated,” he said, according to Reuters. Before being barred, Shah apologized in parliament for her remark.
Shah in May admitted that she was “ignorant about Judaism” when she made the anti-Semitic comments leading to her suspension.
Despite her previous gaffes, she insisted at the time that she believes in Israel’s rights to exist and to self-defense, and that – contrary to fellow Bradford politician and rival George Galloway – she does not believe in Bradford being an “Israel-free zone.”
Shah, of course, is far from being the only Labour lawmaker to have come under fire for anti-Semitism. Former London mayor Ken Livingstone was also suspended for saying Hitler had supported Zionism “before he went mad and ended up killing 6 million Jews”.
Shah and Livingstone are two out of dozens of Labour members who have been suspended due to anti-Semitic remarks.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has himself come under fire for, among other things, describing terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah as “his friends” – comments for which he apologized on Tuesday.
