Joint List backs Zoabi, blasts ‘fascist attack’ against her

June 29, 2016

The Joint List party on Wednesday stood behind its MK Hanin Zoabi and blasted what it called the “fascist attack” against her by MKs from both the coalition and opposition during the Knesset debate on the reconciliation agreement between Israel and Turkey.

A shouting match erupted on the floor of the Knesset during an address by Zoabi following the government’s ratification of the deal with Turkey.

Zoabi, who participated in the 2010 “Gaza flotilla” which attempted to break Israel’s security blockade on Gaza, gloated over Israel’s concessions to Turkey and claimed the newly-inked agreement with Turkey vindicated her support for the flotilla.

She was removed from the plenum after claiming in her speech that the Israeli naval commandos “murdered” the passengers of the Mavi Marmara.

“The incitement and vitriolic attacks against members of the Joint List are continuing and escalating,” the party said in a statement.

“The killing of peace activists is a small crime, because the larger crime is the siege of two million people in the world’s largest prison, and the killing of thousands during the Israeli war against them,” added the Joint List.

The party demanded in the statement that the incitement against Arab MKs in general and Zoabi in particular stop, emphasizing that it will continue to fight for the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and for the removal of the “occupation”.

Following Wednesday’s incident, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit regarding the possible expulsion of Zoabi from the Knesset, saying her actions “crossed the line and she has no place in the Knesset.”

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, meanwhile, blasted Zoabi and said, “The soldiers of the IDF will continue to fight terrorists on land, sea, and air, including terrorists sailing on the sea [in flotillas], and who happen to be Knesset members.”
