Hillary Clinton faces renewed e-mail investigation

July 8, 2016

The US State Department is reopening its investigation into presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s misuse of classified information.

Earlier this week, the FBI recommended not filing criminal charges against Clinton for hosting her e-mail on private servers, despite acknowledging that she acted in an “extremely careless” manner.

The State Account inquiry is not as serious as the FBI’s, though it will also investigate some of Clinton’s former aides from when she was Secretary of State.

A department spokesperson said, “We will aim to be as expeditious as possible, but we will not put artificial deadlines on the process.”

The most serious punishment available would be to revoke Clinton’s security clearance. Even if this were to be the outcome, it would almost certainly have no effect should Clinton win the election.
