Herzog: Labor primaries will be held in 2017

July 9, 2016

Zionist Union chairman MK Yitzhak Herzog said on Saturday that the Labor party primaries will be held in the second half of 2017.

“The party’s Central Committee will convene in the coming weeks, and decide when the primaries for the party leadership will take place. If they decide I am not good enough to lead – let them replace me; I believe in my ability to win,” Herzog said during an event in Holon.

Herzog also did not rule out joining the government, after previous attempts to have him join Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition ended when Netanyahu reached out and added Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman to the coalition.

“If I recognize a possibility that could change the situation in the region, I will do what I can. It is important to clarify, I’m not waiting to rescue Netanyahu. I am waiting for the ability to change the reality,” he said, adding that he is working to strengthen the Zionist Union’s Knesset list.

“I called on [former Defense Minister] Ya’alon. I called on Orly Levy. I called on [former IDF Chief of Staff Gabi] Ashkenazi and [former IDF Chief of Staff Benny] Gantz and called on [Ehud] Barak too. Anyone who wants to join a large bloc – is welcome to do so,” said Herzog.

Coalition talks between the Zionist Union and the Likud appeared to be over when Netanyahu joined forces with Yisrael Beytenu and Avigdor Liberman, but Herzog later hinted that his party would reconsider joining the coalition if Netanyahu ousted the Jewish Home from the government.

Even after the agreement with Liberman, Netanyahu has called to expand the coalition even further, in an apparent overture to Herzog.

Herzog’s talks with Netanyahu have caused an uproar within his own party.
