Haredim

July 18, 2016

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit will determine the status of the haredi population of Israel over the next few days, as the question arises as to whether they constitute a minority group.

This question would change the face of society, as cities could be legally designated “Haredi,” just like there are now “Arab” and “Druze” cities, without it being considered discriminatory.

According to a report on Army Radio, The process under discussion has been forming in the Justice Ministry in the past few months, under the guidance of Attorney General Mandelblit, and with the involvement of the Deputy Advisor of Civil Affairs, among other players.

At the end of the day, the recognition is expected to pass, following a precedent set by the Supreme Court, which has already recognized haredim as a minority population.

However, if the haredim do achieve minority status, there is a concern that the religious Zionist public will also fight for the same, with all the benefits it entails.
