Government advances plan to support Hevron, Kiryat Arba

July 6, 2016

In addition to new security efforts that have been approved by the Political-Security Cabinet, the government is advancing a broad plan to support the Har Hevron communities, with an emphasis on Hevron and Kiryat Arba.

The project, which is expected to cost about 50 million shekels ($13 million US), has been on the government’s agenda for several weeks, though its treatment was accelerated following the recent attacks in Kiryat Arba and Otniel.

The significant clauses deal with strengthening the local infrastructure and encouraging the communities’ resilience. The government intends to discuss and approve the proposal by its next meeting on Sunday.

Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home), who initiated the project, says that “The terrorists are trying to remove us from here and we need to remain strong and connected. It has been clear since the early days of Zionism that we defeat Arab terror through settlement activity alongside security actions. That’s how it is along Gaza, that’s how it is on the northern border, and also on Har Hevron. Our message is that everywhere they murder us, we will add to the life. Everywhere they destroy, we will build and plant. It is always right to develop these communities, and especially during these times.”

National Union party director Ophir Sofer responded to the proposal by saying: “The National Union party congratulates the Israeli government and Minister Uri Ariel for promoting the government decision to strengthen Kiryat Arba and Hevron. This decision expresses our obligation to the public that lives on the frontline and pays the heavy price for standing firm on behalf of the People of Israel in Judea and Samaria.

“We will continue working to strengthen the settlement enterprise that has received support from the clear majority of the Jewish People, and so we will give a Zionist answer to the terror that is trying to remove us from here,” he added.
