Former IDF Chief Rabbi defends new appointee

July 13, 2016

Brigadier General (res.) Rabbi Israel Weiss, the former Chief IDF Rabbi, has defended the new appointee, Rabbi Eyal Karim.

“I think that these expressions were part of a study program, with learned scholars who sit and deal with Torah issues,” Rabbi Weiss told Channel 10.

As for the “attractive woman” commandment and Rabbi Karim’s comments about conduct in the time of war, Rabbi Weiss explained: “I wouldn’t make such a statement. If he meant to deal with modern issues he would have said it differently.”

According to Rabbi Weiss, “Rabbi Karim spearheaded the IDF’s proper integration and suggested the idea of including girls in the army. He was at the forefront of this issue.”

He further told how, over the past ten years, Rabbi Karim has watched out for every religious female soldier and created a military infrastructure to outline the way in which they enlist. “He understood that an army without girls is not an army.”

“We must remember that he served in Sayeret Matkal. He has an exemplary military past and a splendid spiritual present. He needs to realize that he is the head rabbi of the Israeli army and behave accordingly. These statements do not represent him at all.”
