Elkin: We will help Amona, one way or another

July 27, 2016

MK Zeev Elkin talked today with Arutz Sheva about steps being taken to help Amona, in light of a Supreme Court order to evacuate the community on grounds that it allegedly is located on private Palestinian land.

“The Committee for Matters of Regulation has approved today a solution that is acceptable also for the community of Amona. At the moment it is awaiting the Attorney General’s approval.”

Elkin was ostensibly referring to an application of the so-called “Abandoned Property Law,” whereby the government would confiscate land near Amona abandoned by Arabs fleeing to hostile nations during the War of Independence. Demolition of houses in Amona would then be delayed until which time new residences could be built on this adjacent property.

“It has been agreed that the Attorney General will give his approval by the end of August, and we in the Legislation Committee set another meeting for the beginning of September so that there will be a clear statement: “either a judicial solution will be found, or we will work to advance the ‘Regulation Law.'”

The latter refers to a previously proposed law whereby Palestinians would be compensated for land presumably under their ownership, in which case Amona would not be evacuated at all. This law, however, was struck down last week when A-G Avichai Mandelblit told the Prime Minister that it wasn’t constitutional and would not make it through the Supreme Court.
