Defense Minister’s son among donors to Azariya’s legal fund

July 12, 2016

A recent online fundraising campaign on behalf of Elor Azariya, the soldier accused of manslaughter after shooting a neutralized Arab terrorist in Hevron, surpassed its goal of 400,000 shekels Monday morning within 12 hours of opening.

The fundraiser, which will help the Azariya family cover their son’s mounting legal expenses, also netted the support of some prominent political figures.

Sharon Gal, a journalist and former Yisrael Beytenu MK, endorsed the effort, calling on the public to help the Azariya family in their time of need.

It was later discovered, however, that one of the donors to the cause also had political ties. Kobi Liberman, son of Yisrael Beytenu chief and Israel’s new Defense Minister, donated to the fund and spoke on behalf of the campaign to free Elor Azariya.

“Elor was wrong to shoot the terrorist, as has been shown by the testimony [in the ongoing trial],” Kobi Liberman told Channel 10, “but to put an 18 year old child through what he has gone through is not moral.”

“The little I can do is to help a bit with the legal expenses to ensure that he receives a fair trial. His family can’t take all of his public communication and legal fees on themselves the way they need to in order to get proper representation, and this is my way of helping.”

But Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman apparently had no knowledge of his son’s donation, according to reports by his associates to “HaKol Kalul”.
