Clinton maintains lead over Trump in latest poll

June 20, 2016

Broad support from women and minority voters has helped Hillary Clinton open an early lead over Donald Trump nationally, a new poll released on Monday finds, according to The New York Times.

The Monmouth University survey found that 47 percent of registered voters back Clinton while 40 percent support Trump.

The survey is the latest in a succession of recent polls that show Clinton having an advantage, as Trump’s campaign has sputtered amid internal strife and an array of provocative public comments.

The poll also found Clinton drawing the support of 72 percent of minority voters and 57 percent of female voters. Trump holds more modest leads among men and white voters, noted The New York Times.

Clinton is also winning in swing states that were decided by less than seven points in 2012. In those 10 states, she is leading by an average margin of 47 percent to 39 percent.

The poll comes a week after the Orlando shooting attack, following which Trump doubled down on his call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration and also criticized President Barack Obama for failing to name Islamic extremism as being responsible for the attack by Omar Mateen, who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS).

The poll found that 70 percent of Americans oppose Trump’s proposed barring of Muslims from entering the country, and 52 percent would like to see a ban on assault weapons such as the one used by the terrorist in Orlando.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey from Friday actually found that Trump was chipping away at Clinton’s lead in the presidential race, showing that Clinton had a 10.7 point lead among likely voters over Trump.
