‘Brexit’ referendum polls close
June 23, 2016Nigel Farage, head of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) said on Thursday night that it “looks like Remain will edge it” as polls closed in the referendum on whether Britain will leave the EU or remain in it.
Speaking to Sky News, the UKIP leader said it had been an “extraordinary” campaign and it looked like turnout had been “exceptionally high”.
He also insisted UKIP were “going nowhere” and predicted the party would “continue to grow stronger in the future”.
Polls in the referendum closed at 10:00 p.m. local time (midnight Israel time) on Thursday night. A YouGov poll released as the ballot boxes closed gave Remain a four-point lead over Leave, but final and official results are not expected until Friday morning.
Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted a note of thanks to British residents who voted.
“Thank you everyone who voted to keep Britain stronger, safer better off in Europe – and thousands of @StrongerIn campaigners around the UK,” he wrote.
The question of the exit from the EU has divided Britain’s two largest parties, with Cameron (Conservative) staunchly opposing exiting the EU, dubbed the “Brexit”, while, a number of high-profile members, including former London Mayor Boris Johnson, have campaigned in favor of “Leave”.
Labour Party chairman Jeremy Corbyn recently astonished long-time allies, abandoning four decades of opposition to the UK’s membership in the EU and coming out in favor of ‘remain’. Many trade unionists oppose Britain’s membership in the union, arguing that open-border policy within the EU and lack of trade restrictions harm British workers.
