‘Bogie party’ beginning to take shape

July 8, 2016

Former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, who resigned from the Knesset in May after being replaced by Avigdor Liberman, is planning to form a new party and has already invited several names to join, Channel 2 News reported on Friday.

Ya’alon announced several weeks ago that he intends to run for Prime Minister and replace Binyamin Netanyahu.

According to Channel 2 News, Ya’alon intends to establish a new right-wing, liberal party, that will be committed to the rule of law. The report also said that he decided against running for the leadership of the Likud, understanding that doing so would be a difficult task, and instead has begun to talk to different figures in order to add them to the party in the making.

Among the people with whom he has spoken, the report said, are former Environment Minister Avi Gabay, who resigned just days before Ya’alon did, as well as MK Orly Levy-Abekasis, who left the Yisrael Beytenu party in protest of the coalition agreement it signed with the Likud.

Other names mentioned in the report are Dr. Yoaz Hendel, head of the Institute for Zionist Strategy, and security research specialist Sima Shine.

Channel 2 News reported that Ya’alon intends to head the new list, in part because of his past experience as Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff.

A poll released shortly after Ya’alon stepped down as Defense Minister found that a new party led by Ya’alon, former Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon could topple the Likud.

According to the poll, such a party would win the next election and achieve 25 Knesset seats. Likud would come down to 21 seats, and Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid would win 13.
