Bennett: Loving every Jew is not a compromise

July 18, 2016

Education Minister Naftali Bennett reacted on Monday to a controversial statement by Rabbi Levinstein, the head of the pre-military academy in Eli, against the “LGBT community.”

According to Bennett, the Halacha is for determining what is permitted and what is forbidden, not for dividing and labeling people. “You can’t label an entire part of the population and then hide behind the Halacha,” he said.

“The things which were said are not the way of Religious Zionism, and I don’t hold by them. The reality is more complicated than simply what is forbidden and what is permitted.

“According to the Jewish tradition, the world doesn’t shape us, rather we shape the world. Rabbi Nachman of Breslev taught us: when we seek the good in others, we ourselves become better, Bennett added.

“The Religious Zionism that I lead is for every Jew, honors every individual, […] is not quick to judge[…] Loving every Jew is not a compromise – it is the essence of Judaism.

“In times of crisis and war, the nation of Israel has always been united. We need to work to be united also in the regular times. We have it in us.”
