Azariya trial: ‘He fired because he felt threatened’

July 13, 2016

The trial of Elor Azariya, who shot and killed a wounded terrorist in Hevron, continues today (Wednesday) in the Jaffa Military Court.

The prosecution put Sergeant D, an army paramedic, on the witness stand today with the expectation that her testimony will strengthen the case that Azariya wasn’t in any danger when he shot the terrorist.

The paramedic arrived at the scene seven minutes after Azariya’s actions. “I saw two neutralized terrorists on the floor. I walked over to them to see if they needed treatment, and I saw they were dead, so I started preparing to evacuate the bodies. Our orders are to treat the most severely wounded person, regardless of whether this is a soldier or a terrorist,” she explained.

She was then asked if Azariya warned her of a possible explosive device on the bodies, and she said no. “Elor told me that there was a neutralized live terrorist who had a knife next to him. He said that when the terrorist moved his head and hand toward the knife, he felt threatened and shot him.

“I told Elor that lots of people will want to ask him about the incident. I was under the impression that he was disoriented, so I advised him to think a bit more about what to say.”

Sergeant D added, “after speaking to Elor, I called the brigade counseling officer to tell him that Elor is very anxious. I asked if he could speak with him.”

The defense lawyers have claimed that there is a conspiratorial plan involving all of Azariya’s commanding officers to scapegoat him.

“We intend on undermining the credibility of the Battalion Commander’s testimony, to show that there’s a junta here, starting from the Company Commander, and ascending through the Battalion Commander, the Brigade Commander, and all the way up to higher levels. All these people are interested in is covering their own behinds so that their promotions aren’t delayed. It’s a disgrace that IDF officers are behaving this way.
