Yitzhak Rabin’s personal guard almost shot Yigal Amir
November 4, 2015Yitzhak Rabin’s personal security guard has spoken out exactly 20 years after the fateful night in which the prime minister was murdered following a peace rally in Tel Aviv.
In an interview with Channel 2, the guard – identified only as A. – recounted the moments leading up to and after the assassination on the night of November 4, 1995.
“We’d already finished walking down to the sidewalk. We had advanced a bit on the sidewalk when suddenly I heard a shot. I turned my head, and I saw a man – who I later identified as Yigal Amir – standing with his right arm outstretched. And then there was another shot.”
A’s immediate reaction was to jump on Amir. “With my right hand, I hit him in the shooting hand and with my left hand I grabbed him and grabbed his neck,” he recalled.
“I hit him with my fists, pulled out a gun and pressed the gun to his head. I thought about it but decided not to shoot.”
A. said memories of the murder would haunt him throughout his life.
“On my last day (on earth) – this will be the thing I think about,” he told the news station.
