Yechimovich the Most Accessible MK, TV Study Finds

If you’re an Israeli citizen looking for help on a personal matter from a Knesset Member, ask MK Shelly Yechimovich of the Labor party.

According to a study by Channel 2’s late night news program, the results of which were published Sunday night, Yechimovich is the most accessible MK in the Knesset. The least accessible MK was found to be Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon.

For 30 days, the program followed Anna Russo, an Israeli citizen who seeks help in acquiring citizenship for her children who were born outside of the country. Using Facebook, Russo turned to dozens of politicians and the program monitored the responses.

Out of 52 MKs to be contacted on Facebook, only 15 – less than a third – responded to Russo’s inquiry.

Even ministers who are very active on Facebook, such as Interior Minister Gilad Erdan, Education Minister Shai Piron and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, did not respond to the inquiry.

The program also found that Ya’alon, Minister of Culture and Sport Limor Livnat, and even MK Orly Levy-Abekasis (Yisrael Beytenu) – who heads the Knesset Committee on Children’s Rights and would have been a natural person to turn to – are not accessible via Facebook, as one cannot post a message on their wall nor is there the option of sending a private message.

Even Finance Minister Yair Lapid, who prides himself on being active on Facebook, was of little help to Russo, the program found. While Lapid’s personal assistant responded to the message and asked for more information which was given to him, Lapid has yet to respond to an e-mail that was sent to him on the matter. The program noted a similar experience with MKs Avishay Braverman (Labor), Eitan Cabel (Labor), Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home), Michal Rozin (Meretz), Adi Koll (Yesh Atid), Yifat Kariv (Yesh Atid) and Pnina Tamano-Shata (Yesh Atid).

MKs who responded almost immediately include Zehava Galon (Meretz), Tamar Zandberg (Meretz), Economy Minister Naftali Bennett and MK Boaz Toporovsky (Yesh Atid).

Yechimovich was declared the most accessible MK as she personally spoke with Russo over the phone and exchanged e-mails with her, and ultimately recommended attorneys to help her out voluntarily. Yechimovich also asked Russo to keep her posted on the developments.
