Democratic Party Chairwoman and Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced on Sunday she would vote in favor of the nuclear deal with Iran.

“In weighing everything, all the information, I’ve concluded the best thing to do is vote in support of the Iran deal and put Iran years away from being a nuclear state,” Wasserman Schultz, the first Jewish-American woman to represent Florida in Congress, told CNN.

She also explained her reasoning in an op-ed in The Miami Herald Sunday.

“I wrote an op-ed in there today that talks about this and my Jewish heart and how important this was to me that as a Jewish mother,” she told CNN, holding back tears. “We have a concept of l’dor v’dor — from generation to generation — there’s nothing more important to me, as a Jew, than to ensure Israel’s existence is there throughout our generations.”

Wasserman Schultz further told the news network she had been in the White House’s Situation Room more than two dozen times over the last two years to get briefed on the deal.

Obama last week secured enough votes in the Senate to safeguard the deal between Iran and world powers.

Congress has until September 17 to accept or reject the deal. Republicans object to the deal, but most Democrats have expressed support for the deal, with the exception of three so far: New York’s Chuck Schumer, New Jersey’s Bob Menendez and Maryland’s Ben Cardin, who announced on Friday he would vote against.

Last week, before making her announcement on the deal, Wasserman Schultz hosted Vice President Joe Biden in her district in Florida, for a meeting with Jewish leaders in which Biden said the deal would make Israel safer.

Wasserman Schultz’s announcement came on the same day that former Secretary of State Colin Powell came out in support of the agreement.

Powell, a retired general who was the top U.S. diplomat under Republican President George W. Bush, said he had studied the deal in depth and listened to arguments from both supporters and opponents.

“My judgment after balancing those two sets of information is that it’s a pretty good deal,” Powell declared on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“The great concern from the opposition is that we’re leaving open a lane for Iran to create a nuclear weapon in 10 to 15 years,” he added. “The reality is that they have been on a super highway for the last 10 years to create a nuclear weapon … with no speed limit.”
