President Obama’s Pro Israel Campaign Video

January 22, 2012

President Barack Obama has pulled out all stops to show himself as pro-Israel in a pre-campaign video that features Defense Minister Ehud Barak, President Shimon Peres and even Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

The video is entitled “America and Israel, an Unbreakable Bond” and it shows clips of the president and the Israeli leaders praising him, with dramatic music in the background and matching oratory from President Obama, who has been attacked by every Republican party presidential hopeful as being bad for Israel and for the United States.

It opens up with pictures of his 2008 campaign visit to the Western Wall — which he now says is not within Israel’s sovereignty.

“When I touched my hand against the Western Wall and placed my prayer between the stones, I thought of all the centuries that the Children of Israel had longed to return to their ancient homeland,” the video records him as saying at the time.

He continued, “When I went to Sderot and saw the daily struggle to survive in the eyes of an eight-year-old boy who lost his leg to a Hamas rocket, and when I walked among the Hall of Names in Yad VaShem, I was reminded of the existential fear of Israel when a modern dictator seeks nuclear weapons and threatens to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.”

The video also shows him saying in 2010, “Iran is a threat…We are determined to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.” Since then, the Ahmadinejad regime has begun producing enriched uranium, a key material for a nuclear bomb, and President Obama only three weeks ago announced tougher sanctions, which still have not been imposed on European countries dealing with Iran.

The film highlights Barak twice, who said of the president, “He is an extremely strong supporter of Israel in regards to its security.”

The campaign video, aimed at winning over Jewish voters disenchanted with President Obama, shows President Peres praising him and even includes a clip of the president’s meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, who said, “I want to thank you, Mr. President for standing with Israel and supporting peace through direct negotiations…. I want to thank you for wearing this badge of honor.”

Earlier in his administration, President Obama publicly snubbed Prime Minister Netanyahu on a visit to Washington, skipping over the traditional meal with a distinguished guest and foregoing a joint press conference.

The exploitation of foreign leaders in an election campaign was panned by the Electronic Intifada website, whose Ali Abunimah wrote, “Obama is legitimizing the role of foreign – although certainly only Israeli leaders – to participate directly in US campaigns. Can we imagine Obama issuing a video in which he is endorsed as pro-Mexican by the President of Mexico, or pro-Canadian by Canada’s prime minister? It’s inconceivable.”

I’m a bit surprised he would go this far. But it’s good for Israel.
