Victorious Regev Expects to Become a Minister

Likud MK Miri Regev, who made it to the fifth spot in the party’s primaries Thursday, told IDF Radio that she expects to be named a minister in the next government.

Asked what portfolio she would like, she said: “First of all, we have to win the coming elections.” She then added that she finds social issues “very interesting,” and cited “labor, construction and housing, reducing gaps and breaking monopolies” as specific areas of interest.

“I thank the thousands of Likud members who placed me high on the list,” Regev stated. “I worked very hard for this and I am glad to be in the Likud’s first five.”

In a recent TV report, Regev said that if Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu fails to tap her as minister, she will carry out “a coup” against him. She claimed Thursday that this was said tongue-in-cheek.

Netanyahu reportedly preferred Tzipi Hotovely to Regev as a female minister, but Hotovely may not enter the next Knesset, whereas Regev’s popularity in the primaries will make it difficult to keep her out of the government.

It must be noted, however, that achieving a high spot in the primaries does not always guarantee a ministerial portfolio.

MK Danny Danon did very well in the primaries that preceded the previous elections, reaching the sixth spot, but was only named as a deputy minister. Yuval Steinitz, who was in the 16th spot, was named Intelligence Minister.

Danon has been a political rival of Netanyahu for years inside the Likud party, while Steinitz has been a loyal ally.
