Uzbek man charged in New York over ISIS terror plot

An Uzbek man has been charged in New York with trying to provide aid to the ISIS terrorist group, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Azizjon Rakhmatov was charged with “conspiring and attempting to provide material support” to ISIS and conspiring to use a firearm, in a case in which four alleged accomplices have also been charged.

Authorities said one of the accused co-conspirators, Abdurasul Juraboev, came to the attention of law enforcement after placing a post on an Uzbek-language website in which he offered to engage in acts of martyrdom on US soil on behalf of ISIS.

Prosecutors said Rakhmatov, who was arrested in early 2015, faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted.
