U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is set to return to Israel on Sunday immediately following a quick visit in Istanbul.

The American official is expected to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to discuss “regional concerns,” according to Voice of America. 

The issues to be discussed in Turkey include the status of the savage civil war raging in Syria, and the possibility of restarting final status talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Kerry is also expected to make a stop in the Palestinian Authority capital of Ramallah, where he is set to meet with PA Chairman and ruling Fatah head Mahmoud Abbas and other officials.

PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad was hospitalized earlier this week with severe stomach pain which later was diagnosed to be an inflamed pancreas, and it is not clear whether he will attend the talks.

According to a report by Sky News Australia, Kerry’s stop in Jerusalem is being framed with the intent of building on declarations made by Israel and the PA during last month’s visit to the region by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The secretary of state is reportedly hoping to motivate both sides to be ready to make “meaningful concessions” for peace, according to the report.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that Kerry will follow his visit with previously scheduled trips to London and Asia.
