US and Israel are Together on Energy and Environment
The two nations are working together like never before in the arenas of energy security and clean technology. The American and Israeli governments, as well as private business ventures in both countries, are partnering to promote new energy solutions and ensure our long-term energy security. This important work is helping to reduce a dangerous dependence on petroleum and pursue sustainable technologies to reduce our environmental impact.
America and Israel understand that developing next-generation energy technologies, such as alternative fuels, is a national security imperative and are working together toward this goal. Starting with a 1984 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a number of agreements have helped drive innovation and cooperation between the U.S. and Israel in the energy arena. In 2008, the countries signed a new MOU for sustainable energy cooperation, which served as the basis for the U.S.-Israel Energy Cooperation Program that is funded annually by Congress.
Already a global high-tech powerhouse, Israel is pioneering developments in the energy sector. In fact, the Israeli government has begun to implement a new initiative that will significantly reduce the country’s dependence on petroleum for transportation purposes by developing oil alternatives, biofuels, synthetics, electric cars and energy efficient vehicles. Its partnership with the United States enables new, innovative projects to be implemented in both nations—creating jobs and protecting our future.
