US airstrike takes out ISIS Libyan branch head
November 14, 2015A US airstrike on Friday night hit and presumably killed the head of Islamic State’s (ISIS) branch in Libya.
The senior ISIS leader was struck by a missile fired by an American F-15 fighter jet, according to a defense official who revealed the operation to NBC News.
The official clarified that the operation started before the six coordinated shooting and suicide bombing attacks in Paris on Saturday that left at least 128 murdered, and that the strike was unrelated to the attacks.
According to Defense One editor Kevin Baron, who also serves as a national security analyst at NBC, the ISIS terrorist leader is known as Abu Nabil or Abu Nabil al Anbari.
The strike is “a significant blow to the Islamic State’s ambitions” in North Africa according to the analyst.
Friday’s airstrike comes just a day after a US strike that targeted the infamous ISIS beheader “Jihadi John,” as British terrorist Mohammed Emwazi came to be known following his numerous videotaped executions.
The US military on Friday said it was confident the strike found its mark an ended Emwazi’s life.
Saturday’s mass attack by ISIS in Paris comes on the heels of two other high-profile attacks conducted by the jihadist group outside its areas of control in recent weeks.
Last Thursday it claimed dual suicide bombings in a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut, leaving 45 dead. Earlier this month it apparently planted a bomb on a Russian Metrojet passenger airliner, killing all 224 people aboard.
