Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tried to defend himself on Tuesday, after the night before he used a Yiddish cuss word against Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton during a rally.

Trump said that in the 2008 Democratic primaries, Clinton “got schlonged” by Barack Obama, using a Yiddish term for a man’s genitals. In the same speech he said Clinton’s lengthy bathroom break in Saturday’s Democratic presidential debates was “disgusting,” and that he didn’t want to talk about it.

But on Tuesday, Trump responded to the uproar over his “schlong” comments, taking to Twitter and writing: “Once again, #MSM (mainstream media – ed.) is dishonest. ‘Schlonged’ is not vulgar. When I said Hillary got ‘schlonged’ that meant beaten badly.”

His tweet was met with scorn by many Twitter users, some of whom put up a photoshopped image of a newspaper being held up with “Dewey schlongs Truman” on the headline. The famous original image is of former President Harry S. Truman holding up the incorrect Chicago Daily Tribune report after his election victory over Thomas Dewey in 1948.

Trump continued in another tweet by striking out at mainstream media.

“For those on TV defending my use of the word ‘schlonged,’ bc #MSM is giving it false meaning-tell them it means beaten badly. Dishonest #MSM.”

Then he cited a NPR report from 1984 in which the term was used in a similar fashion.

“NPR’s @NealConan said ‘schlonged’ to WaPo re: 1984 Mondale/Ferraro campaign: ‘That ticket went on to get schlonged at the polls.’ #Hypocrisy.”

Trump lashed out at Clinton on Monday after she on Tuesday called him “ISIS’s best recruiter,” indicating Islamic State (ISIS) and claiming his proposal to block Muslim entry to the US to stem the influx of terrorists would be used to incite terror.

Clinton refused a request to apologize for the statement earlier on Monday, saying “hell no” to the request.

Her campaign’s director of communications Jennifer Palmieri responded to Trump’s verbal attack on Tuesday, calling his comments “degrading language” causing “humiliation” to women.
