One of the leaders of the Syrian opposition is saying that the Syrian people will seek regional peace, including with Israel.
In an interview with Kol Yisrael radio, portions of which were released on Friday, Nofal al-Dawalibi, said that if Presdient Bashar Assad’s regime falls, the Syrian people will realize their deprived rights and will seek peace in the region.
Speaking from Paris, al-Dawalibi said that the Friends of the Syria conference which was held in Paris this week does not bode well for the Syrian people, and that it offered no practical solutions for the ongoing crisis in the country.
He said that thousands of observers should be sent to Syria rather than hundreds, adding they must be armed in order to defend themselves. He attacked the Assad regime in harsh words, calling it a “germ of a mafia.”
The Kol Yisrael reporter asked al-Dawalibi who can guarantee that a more extreme regime will not rise in Syria after Assad’s fall, to which al-Dawalibi replied that the guarantee is that the Syrian people do not want war with Israel and are in great need for peace and stability.
Deputy Minister Ayoub Kara, who maintains close contacts with representatives of the Syrian opposition, told Kol Yisrael radio that Nofal al-Dawalibi is a personality about which there is a broad agreement among the Syrian opposition and the West.
Kara is the person in charge of coordinating the transfer of humanitarian aid from Israel to Syrian citizens who are suffering deprivation under the regime of Bashar Assad and its brutal crackdown on the ongoing rebellion against it.
Syrian exiles recently told Kara’s bureau chief that “The declaration by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman that Israel will transfer humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people proves that Israel is the only humanitarian country in the Middle East.”
