Swastikas and the word “skinhead” were painted on the baseball field of an elementary school in Orange County, California, officials said Monday.

According to The Lost Angeles Times, Principal Deborah Granger of Kaiser Elementary School in Costa Mesa said that faculty members first noticed the slurs when they arrived on school grounds.

Swastikas were painted on trash cans, and the word “skinhead” with a swastika had been painted on part of the backstop, Granger said, according to The Times.  

Over the weekend, a usually locked gate that is used by other campuses had been left open, Granger added.

The Newport Mesa Unified School District typically paints over graffiti or tagging before students arrive at school, unless it’s on a mural, in which case the artist is contacted, said district spokeswoman Laura Boss, according to the paper.

No further details have been released and there is currently no indication of who was responsible for the vandalism.
