The relationship between Israel and the United States (US) has been unhealthy for some time, in part due to disputes over a wide range of strategic issues.
Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister, MK Yuval Steinitz (Likud), one of the ministers closest to Netanyahu, is responsible for dialogue with the United States regarding the Iranian nuclear program.
Army Radio revealed Sunday a recording of Steinitz sounding off in closed meetings. The statements seem to demonstrate the Israeli government’s treatment and perception of the Obama administration behind closed doors.
In the recording, Steinitz can be heard discussing his contact with the US administration on two issues – the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the nuclear deal with Iran.
Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Steinitz says, “Someone needs to explain to the Americans that after what happened in Gaza, do they really think we’re going to commit suicide here and allow what happened in Gaza to be repeated in Judea and Samaria.”
Steinitz is the minister who runs the dialogue with the United States on the subject of the Iranian nuclear deal, and is to leave soon for Washington for another round of talks – especially in light of Iran’s latest demand.
Ali Akbar Velayati, head of the Center for Strategic Research of Iran’s Expediency Council, came out Saturday stating that Iran believes nuclear talks with six world powers must be concluded by the November 24 deadline.
“I have to go again soon, unfortunately, but it’s my job to manage all of our international contacts on the Iranian nuclear issue. It will not necessarily be a good agreement, but we’re working hard for it not to be a catastrophe,” said Steinitz, adding, “No good will come from this.”
Steinitz’s office responded to the radio broadcast calling it “nothing new,” adding that “similar comments were made by him publicly many times in Israeli media and the international media.”
