Soldiers Attacked with Stones at Dawabshe Funeral in Duma

Thousands gathered Monday afternoon in the Palestinian village of Duma for the funeral of Riham Dawabshe.

Dawabshe passed away at Sheba Medical Center on Sunday night after sustaining major burns in an arson attack on her home in late July, which also killed her infant son, Ali, and her husband, Sa’ad.

The Dawabshes’ older son, Ahmad, 4, was injured in the attack as well, but his condition has improved drastically in recent weeks, though he is still being hospitalized at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva.

Funeral participants carried PLO and Hamas flags as they marched alongside Dawabshe’s body through the village in northern Samaria. Some chanted “Israel – terrorist state.”

Dozens of Palestinian youths also threw stones at security forces patrolling the area for fear of riots and public disturbances.

In response, the IDF closed the Alon axis to prevent attacks on Israeli civilians driving on the road.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to the Dawabshe family over Riham’s death. He added that security forces were doing their utmost to apprehend the assailants and bring them to justice.

The Prime Minister’s comments follow criticism from Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations envoy to the Middle East, who expressed concern at the “lack of progress in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of this outrage.”

“The tragedy of the Dawabsha family serves as a shocking example of the destructive nature of extremism,” he said.

Security authorities have pointed a finger at so-called “Jewish terrorists” or “right-wing extremists” as being responsible for the arson, but have so far been unable to prove any such individuals were connected with the attack.
