Singapore: No Assassination Plot Against Barak

Singapore police denied Thursday that they foiled a plot to assassinate Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak while he was visiting the city-state.

“The report is untrue. No such incident occurred in Singapore,” police told AFP.

The alleged assassination attempt on Barak was first reported by the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida. Al Jarida said Singaporean police and the Mossad had jointly foiled the plot.

The report added that three members of a Hizbullah-Iranian terror cell were arrested by Singapore authorities, and that they planned to try to assassinate Barak at his hotel.

The information on the plot was obtained by Mossad, which alerted Singapore before Barak’s visit, according to the report.

In Jerusalem, an Israeli defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP,  “We have no knowledge of this.”

Barak was in Singapore to attend the Singapore Airshow this week and hold talks with officials.

The al-Jarida report comes after an Israeli diplomat’s wife was seriously wounded in a car bombing in Delhi on Monday and Thai officials arrested three Iranians involved in a botched bombing they say was targeting Israeli diplomats.

Another attack in the capital of Georgia was averted when local authorities disarmed a bomb attached to an Israeli diplomat’s car.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Wednesday the attacks unmasked Iran’s “true face.”

“Iran is undermining the world’s stability and harms innocent diplomats,” Netanyahu said. “World countries must condemn Iran’s terror acts and draw a red line.”

Speaking from Nicosia on Thursday, Netanyahu expressed growing impatience with Tehran. “We are dealing with a regime that violates every resolution and has no respect for international standards,” the Israeli premier said. “Iran’s race towards nuclear weapons should concern the US and every other country.”

Also Thursday, Israel’s envoy to the United Nations Ron Prosor filed a complaint with UN chief Ban Ki-moon over what he described as an Iranian “terror campaign” targeting Israeli diplomats.

Iran has denied involvement in the attacks.
