Shin Bet orders release of hunger-striking Hamas member

The Israel Security Agency (ISA, also known as the Shin Bet or Shabak) has acknowledged that Mohammad al-Qiq, a Palestinian journalist who is affiliated with Hamas, will be released on May 21. This is the final date of his current sentence.

Al-Qiq is being held in administrative detention and has been on a hunger strike for more than 90 days.

ISA notes that the 33-year-old prisoner, originally from Duma, was arrested several times for being involved in Hamas actions, most recently after being identified as taking part in terror attacks.

In addition, he is known as an extremist who incites to violence and praises terror attacks. At the end of his investigation, during which time no evidence was found to put him on trial, al-Qiq was placed under administrative detention.

ISA says that, unless they receive new security information about al-Qiq and despite there being no change in his circumstances, they will not renew his detention order.
